Y Formula

We prefer this brand because...

In our clinic, Y Formula™ reliably gives excellent results for both upper and lower digestive symptoms including flatulence, bloating, heartburn, reflux (GERD), IBS, and chronic constipation. It is extremely gentle, safe, and usually doesn’t burp up any flavor. Each of the four major soothing digestive herbs in this blend, oregano, goldenseal, peppermint & thyme, enhance each other’s actions. They also encourage flourishing of “good” bacteria in the bowel, working well with probiotics and reducing small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

Our patients generally receive rapid relief from symptoms, and enduring improvements in digestion and elimination. Peppermint oil is delicate and can lose its potency in stomach acid. This soft gel allows the essential oils to move through the stomach intact to be released for optimum benefit in the small intestine and eventually the colon. Y Formula™ is best taken 30-60 minutes before meals.

About this product

With over 60 known species of oregano, only one, Origanum vulgare, is used for making essential oils. That is due to its high concentration of carvacrol and thymol; compounds that research indicated can inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi including E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus and shows promise against antibiotic-resistant pathogens. In addition, oregano oil can help combat fungal infections such as candidiasis and may be effective against cold and flu viruses.

Carvacol has been shown to suppress inflammatory mediators, making it useful for conditions like arthritis. It is rich in antioxidants. Research in the Journal of Medicinal Foods indicates that oregano oil influences cytokine production, which is vital for orchestrating an effective immune response. It’s antiviral properties are well recognized, particularly against respiratory pathogens. Can help alleviate digestive issues such as bloating, indigestion, and diarrhea by promoting a healthy gut environment.

Studies show that the anti-inflammatory properties of oregano oil, particularly carvacrol, can suppress inflammation, benefit those suffering from chronic inflammatory conditions like arthritis. Thymol compliments carvacrol by providing additional anti-inflammatory properties.

Oregano oil is rich with antioxidants that neutralize free radicals, reducing oxidative damage and lowering the risk of chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neurological disorders. A 2016 study found that oregano oil exhibited significant antioxidant activity, which is closely linked to its anti-inflammatory properties.

Oregano oil’s antimicrobial effects can promote gut health by inhibiting the growth of potentially harmful microorganisms in the digestive tract thus promoting a healthy balance of beneficial intestinal microbes. Research published in Global Advances in Health and Medicine found that oregano can effectively treat small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) by inhibiting pathogenic bacteria. Studies also show that oregano oil can promote overall gut health, reducing indigestion bloating, and gastrointestinal inflammation.

Goldenseal is a perennial bitter herb native to North America used in Native American traditional medicine to support digestion and gastrointestinal health. Research suggests that the plant’s compounds, Berberine and beta-hydrastine, can help maintain a healthy balance of gut and intestinal flora as this alkaloid has antimicrobial properties that fight off harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
Goldenseal impacts digestive health in several additional ways: it stimulates the digestive system, encouraging bile secretion and enhancing the absorption of nutrients; regulates stomach acid production helping to relieve heartburn and indigestion; has anthelmintic properties making it a natural remedy for internal parasites.

The anti-inflammatory capacity of goldenseal can potentially relieve symptoms associated with inflammatory conditions such as inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. It can potentially help heal ulcers as it was found. In test tube studies, it that goldenseal extracts may fight against H. pylori, a bacteria that can infect your stomach lining and cause stomach ulcers. The anti-inflammatory effects of goldenseal may also offer some relief to arthritis sufferers as it may help to reduce joint pain and swelling.

Peppermint naturally grows wild in central and southern Europe. Peppermint oil is high in menthol and has been recommended for centuries by traditional herbalists to support healthy digestion. Peppermint oil has a dose-related antispasmodic effect on intestinal smooth musculature, possibly by blocking calcium channels. Peppermint has effects on the histamine, 5-hydroxytriptamine, and cholinergic systems of the gut. Peppermint appears to encourage normal rhythmic muscle movements, peristalsis, of the intestinal tract and relax spasms. In vitro, peppermint oil relaxes colon smooth muscle cells. Clinically peppermint eases the abdominal distention, cramps, gas, and disturbed bowel function of IBS. Studies show that up to 89 or 94% of patients report improvement of IBS symptoms after four to eight weeks on peppermint.

The ulcer-protective action of peppermint may be due to free radical-scavenging; menthol in mint is a carminative, relaxing the esophageal sphincter and easing esophageal spasms. For the gall bladder, the flavonoids and terpenes in peppermint oil are anti-spasmodic, choleretic (increases bile flow), and they improve the solubility of bile. Studies show that peppermint oil releases morphine-induced contraction of Dodi’s sphincter, all of which leads to less gall bladder pain and more free-flowing bile. In healthy volunteers, peppermint oil capsules calmed gall bladder contraction as seen on ultrasound and slowed intestinal transit time measured by a lactulose H2 breath test. Peppermint oil appears to directly act on the brush border membrane of the intestine. It acts against candida albicans which is a factor in microbial imbalance and overgrowth of noxious bacteria. Peppermint also seems to be liver protective, likely due to its antioxidant properties.

Thyme is a relative of mint and rosemary and native to the Mediterranean region where it has been used medicinally since the 1500’s. The volatile oil in thyme includes thymol and carvacol, which are antispasmodic, carminative, and antibacterial which act against certain Staphylococcus species, Bacillus subtilis and E. coli, relieving intestinal cramping and encouraging good flora.

Thyme also includes flavonoids apigenin and thymonin which are potent antioxidants. There is evidence that thyme may slow brain cell aging, help brain function, and boost the levels of healthy omega-3 fats in brain cell membranes as well as in the heart and kidneys.

Cautions

Always take natural remedies under the supervision of your health care provider. Do not use if you take Alzheimer’s drugs or anti-cholinergic drugs as thyme may interact with them.

Consult your healthcare professional if you have heart conditions as thyme oil can cause bradycardia (decreased heart rate).

Do not take Y Formula™ without the advice of your healthcare professional if you take medications for blood thinning medications such as warfarin as thyme oil might slow blood clotting.
