Ginger SAP
We prefer this brand because...
Ginger root is an effective natural medicine, but it needs to be strong enough to be useful. Ginger SAP is a particularly effective concentrate of ginger, standardized to contain 5% of the key active compound gingerol. We have seen excellent results with Ginger SAP with our patients, for motion sickness and nausea, circulation concerns and inflammatory arthritis. Ginger SAP is vastly more potent than ginger root tea, which is nice but requires many strong cups to reach medicinal levels.
As with all botanicals, we recommend taking Ginger SAP between meals. The dose for nausea and vertigo is 100-200 mg, for arthritis 200-300 mg daily. The active constituent gingerol is a relative of capsaicin and piperine which give chili peppers and black pepper their respective spiciness.
About this product
Ginger root is a rhizome originally used in China and other parts of Asia, the Caribbean, West Africa, and India. The pungent flavor of ginger is due to volatile oils and gingerols. Gingerols increase healthy motility of the gastrointestinal tract and have analgesic, sedative, antipyretic, and antibacterial properties. Hence ginger is classically used to ease nausea related to motion sickness, digestive upsets, after surgery, and during pregnancy, although pregnant women should use caution as ginger in high doses may raise the risk of miscarriage.
Ginger is a sialagogue, aiding saliva flow, which makes swallowing easier, and a carminative for dispelling gas. We find ginger concentrate effective for motion sickness, benign positional vertigo, and Meniere’s disorder. Ginger is also a circulation tonic, warming according to traditional Eastern medicine, and seems to improve blood flow. It is helpful for Raynaud’s phenomenon and may be valuable for cardiomyopathy. Gingerols reduced blood pressure in studies and may prevent blood clots.
Ginger can relieve menstrual cramps, maybe by enhancing pelvic circulation: it eased pain for more than 60% of women in research. For joints, there is strong evidence that ginger eases osteoarthritis pain, and gingerol can help rheumatoid and other types of inflammatory arthritis. Studies have found that ginger may lessen muscle pain and swelling, and we use it for fibromyalgia.
For the respiratory system, ginger has a strong antitussive (cough-calming) effect and we often recommend ginger for cold along with garlic.

Cautions
Always take natural remedies under the supervision of your health care provider. Consult your healthcare professional before using ginger if you are taking medications for diabetes or high blood pressure or taking blood thinners as ginger can lower blood pressure and blood sugar and can increase clotting times. Do not use if you have a bleeding disorder.
Rarely mouth irritation or gas can occur with high doses of ginger above 5,000 mg daily.
If you are pregnant or nursing, only use under the guidance of your physician as ginger may stimulate the uterus and raise the risk of miscarriage in high doses.
