Vitamin B-12 5,000 mcg

We prefer this brand because...

This formula is one of the best-absorbed vitamin B12 formulas we’ve experienced. Our patients have used it for years and it works so well that we no longer need to offer vitamin B12 injections. It is tasty, easy to use, and we have seen excellent results with patients’ blood B12 levels jumping up rapidly, for example going from a low 300 pg/mL to an ideal level of 800-900 or higher within four weeks. Many patients report a steady improvement in overall stamina and some comment that they feel a little energy boost for an hour after a dose. We recommend that Vitamin B12 5,000 mcg is dissolved slowly under the tongue, in the morning or afternoon, between or after meals. It can be bitten into pieces to dissolve faster, but without chewing or swallowing it. Vitamin B12 contains vitamin B12 as cyanocobalamin, which we’ve seen to be efficiently converted into the biologically active methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin forms in the body.

About this product

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin with activity in every cell; it has crucial roles in DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation and maturation, and normal brain and nervous system function. It is necessary for myelin sheath and nerve conduction, neurotransmitters and brain metabolism, and for maintaining mood. Additionally, it is involved in energy production via roles in fatty acid and amino acid metabolism. Many people have a dietary B12 deficiency as it is only rich in red meats, organ meats like liver, and eggs; neither fungi, plants, or animals can make vitamin B12. And absorption of vitamin B12 is fraught with hurdles: in the stomach, vitamin B12 needs Intrinsic Factor to absorb and sufficient acid to release it from protein foods. Then it travels all the way to the far end of the small intestine (terminal ileum) to cross into the blood stream. Taking a sublingual dose bypasses the digestive tract and guarantees easy entry into the body. Deficiency of vitamin B12 is associated with tinging, numbness, fatigue, anemia, and at the worst mental impairment that resembles Alzheimer’s.

Medicinally, vitamin B12 is used for asthma for which it is a specific remedy, mild depression, diabetes and diabetic neuropathy, raising sperm count, tinnitus, and it is sometimes given for multiple sclerosis. Vitamin B12 is also important for heart protection: along with vitamin B6 and folic acid it reduces homocysteine, a metabolic waste product that can damage artery walls, promote atherosclerosis, and compromise bone density.

Though it is not included in this formula, it’s usually best to have folic acid included with vitamin B12 to make sure that a folic acid deficiency is not masked. Folic acid cannot be made in the human body; it is found in green leafy plants and converted in the body into active dihydrofolate, tetrahydrofolate, and other forms. Folic acid is essential for DNA synthesis and methylation and thus for cell division. It is critical for making red blood cells and for development of the fetal nervous system. It is involved in making neurotransmitters and preventing depression. Working with vitamin B12 and B6, it lowers homocysteine; an excess of which may damage artery walls and worsen osteoporosis by interfering with collagen’s role in building a strong bone matrix.

The medicinal uses of folic acid include cervical dysplasia for which it can improve abnormal Pap smears over six to twelve months and prevent neural tube defects in pregnancy. For depression, folic acid may increase serotonin in the brain and sensitize its receptors. Additionally, 2009 research found that along with vitamin B12 and B6, folic acid decreased the risk of developing macular degeneration by 34.7%.

Cautions

Always take natural remedies under the supervision of your health care provider. Folic acid supplementation should be taken along with vitamin B12, at least 400 mcg daily, because folic acid can mask a B12 deficiency, reversing pernicious anemia but not addressing the neurological problems from B12 deficiency. Consult your healthcare professional if you are taking estrogen, sulfasalazine, or anticonvulsant medicines as these can all interfere with folic acid absorption; avoid folic acid if you are taking methotrexate.

Only use under the guidance of your physician if pregnant or nursing.
